How to engage mentors?

First, think: Do I need direct suggestions on what I should do?  If yes, you need a coach instead. To engage mentors, consider 3 practical issues:

  1. Understand that they support you to make YOUR OWN conclusion, usually thru storytelling, active listening, and asking open-ended questions.
  2. Try not to say: I want you to mentor me because that’s a heavy charge. Do your homework and start with an informal conversation. Due to its flexibility, online meetups can be efficacious so don’t discount it when trying to engage them.
  3. Don’t stress if you can’t get much 1-on-1 time! They are role models for the behaviors/achievements that you’re developing. You don’t necessarily need to engage mentors directly; you can learn a lot by simply observing:
    • how they react under pressure
    • how they regulate/express emotions
    • how they align their actions with ethics
