First, think: Do I need direct suggestions on what I should do? If yes, you need a coach instead. To engage mentors, consider 3 practical issues:
- Understand that they support you to make YOUR OWN conclusion, usually thru storytelling, active listening, and asking open-ended questions.
- Try not to say: I want you to mentor me because that’s a heavy charge. Do your homework and start with an informal conversation. Due to its flexibility, online meetups can be efficacious so don’t discount it when trying to engage them.
- Don’t stress if you can’t get much 1-on-1 time! They are role models for the behaviors/achievements that you’re developing. You don’t necessarily need to engage mentors directly; you can learn a lot by simply observing:
- how they react under pressure
- how they regulate/express emotions
- how they align their actions with ethics
