What to do when your boss constantly undermines your work?

It’s not in your boss’s best interest to undermine your work. Decide whether to give them benefit of the doubt with 3 steps:

  1. Reflect. What were the undermining behaviors? Something quantifiable, eg. delayed feedback, lack of transparency, or more soft skill-related, e.g., dismissive, public criticism. Or was it really about not giving credit where credit is due?
  2. Seek clarity from your boss. Provide specific examples where the project was not as successful due to [undermined work]. Avoid sounding accusatory: you’re micromanaging, playing favorites, passive-aggressive, deliberate sabotage. Just ask for their behavior change to enable you for project success. Giving them the benefit of the doubt gives you room to grow, too.
  3. What to do if your boss brushes off your concerns about being undermined or you conclude that your race/sex/age made you a target? RUN!!!
