Not every problem needs a solution. Enhance your problem-solving abilities 3 ways:
- Assess urgency vs. importance. When the project must stop work, the problem is urgent. If the ultimate project goal hangs in the balance, the problem is important. Deadline usually drives urgency; so re-negotiate deadline for un-important problems.
- Time heals while resentment builds. Even when a problem is not urgent, its importance mounts when relationship (client or team member) can be jeopardized. If you can’t work on solving the problem right away, acknowledge what’s happening so it doesn’t appear you’re ignoring it.
- Evaluate potential solutions! Enhance objectivity by using a decision matrix. It also serves as documentation in case you need to re-evaluate to select an alternate solution. Problem solving abilities must involve identifying more than one possible outcomes.
