How to hone problem-solving skills outside of the workplace?

Outside of the workplace, home is a low-cost high-reward environment to hone problem-solving skills for solutions. Train yourself 3 ways:

  1. In a relationship? Keep the peace for 1 week to hone classic problem-solving skills:
    • anticipate the tipping point to avert disagreements
    • listen more closely to respond with precision
    • no retort until you’ve thought through the pros and cons
  2. With children? Ask for their opinion. Children’s unfiltered thoughts and ‘silly’ questions can stimulate creative thinking that is crucial for solutions! You also gain a good story from outside of the workplace to tell at work.
  3. Blessed with Mom or a mom figure in your life? Talk to them. Moms can launch into a long story, start crying, or turn the heat on you 🙂 Practice problem-solving skills to lower the risks with possible solutions: pre-plan your communication strategies so her psychological needs are met and you emerge unscathed. Also devise an exit plan!
