How to explain project management to someone unfamiliar with the concept?

Shed light on the concept of project management by comparing its focus to that of leadership. Here’re 3 essentials:

  1. “The plan is nothing, planning is everything”. Leaders catch a vision by seeing the big picture and project managers keep their lens clean (and manage risks by procuring a microscope and scheduling an eye exam).
  2. Get the right work done by the right people at the right time for the right cost. Leaders must make tradeoffs everyday and project managers “keep the train moving” – amidst technology changes, new policies, and globalization – to enable data points for decision-making.
  3. Process + people. Leaders focus on people and project managers focus on the process from cradle to grave, while integrating people in every phase of the project. Balancing process and people in project management is a key concept!
