How to maintain composure when speaking off the cuff?

Extemporaneous speaking tests any speaker. Here’re 3 confidence boosters when speaking off the cuff:

  1. Don’t start by stating how nervous, unprepared, or caught off guard you are. The audience does not necessarily know that’s how you feel until you admit to it.
  2. Get to the point. If you have a definite view, say it upfront and then expand into the details. English speakers focus on the beginning part of the conversation as the most crucial, so speaking in this sequence will gain you more interest and attention.
  3. Re-state the question, the topic, or the significance of the information. When speaking off the cuff, that gives you at least 10 seconds to compose your thoughts about what to say next!
