After publishing in the 2025 Survey Practice special issue on cross-cultural and multilingual research in an online, open access format, you have the option to put your articles in a book format. That is, your special issue articles are to be presented as chapters in a printed book for an expanded audience through the dissemination channels for printed books. Please review the detailed FAQs below.

Participation (18 FAQ)

Why a printed book?

Traditional print media are making a comeback because many people still enjoy materials they can physically hold in their hands. For example, anecdotally we see people print their digital photos as treasured mementos and digital photo printing has become a very large industry.

There is also a level of prestige associated with the print media, especially printed books that are registered with an ISBN, searchable on Amazon.com and Google Books, and available from bookstores and libraries. These distribution channels help to (even further) expand the reach of the authors’ messages.

What are the goals for this project?

Making a profit is not a goal for this project. The goals are threefold: (1) to have the ability to include your articles in a printed book format; (2) to disseminate your publication through Amazon.com, Google Books, and bookstores (and libraries if they catalog the book); and (3) to create an instant collectible together!

The articles are a reprint from editor-reviewed academic e-journal Survey Practice and will be acknowledged as such in the book’s back cover, preface, and the publishing information page inside the front cover.

Are the special issue authors required to have their articles printed in book format?

No, the book format is not an obligation, it is a privilege in the sense that we are giving the world the gift of your knowledge in as many ways as possible.

As a special issue author, do I need to do more writing for the book format?

If your article is accepted for the special issue, you do not need to do more writing because the printed book does not alter the content of your article.

Please note this does not mean that the book production process is simple. See the Cost section of the FAQ for more information.

As a special issue author, do I need to do non-writing related work for the book format?

It is in your best interest to review the proof for the book; however, you can opt not to. In addition, because we want to make the book available at the 2026 AAPOR conference in Los Angeles, proof review must be done in a coordinated way. Please understand that we will be unable to accommodate late reviews, changes to the article and authorship, or last-minute requests.

I am part of the special issue editorial team. What should I know about my participation?

You are not required to participate. Like the special issue authors, the book format is not an obligation, it is a privilege.

If you decide to participate, it is in your best interest to review the proof for the book such as the editors’ preface; however, you can opt not to. In addition, because we want to make the book available at the 2026 AAPOR conference in Los Angeles, proof review must be done in a coordinated way and we will be unable to accommodate late reviews or last-minute requests.

Are there any consequences if I decline to participate in the book format project?

There is no penalty whatsoever. Your participation in the book format project does not affect the special issue status of your article with Survey Practice. Participation is a privilege, not an obligation.

What are potential risks to me for participating in the book format project?

For most participating authors, the risk is low. Putting on our “IRB hat”, we can think of two potential risks: (1) If you are someone who does not wish to bring attention to you personally, there might be a potential risk of embarrassment due to the additional exposure you will receive because of the book. (2) [this was raised by someone in the academia] “how academic reputations might be impacted by something that appears to be self-published”, even though the articles are a reprint from Survey Practice, an editor-reviewed academic e-journal published by AAPOR.

Do I personally need to get permission from the Survey Practice journal, AAPOR, or AAPOR’s publications committee?

No, you are covered under their Author Terms & Conditions. The book editors have also been in contact with AAPOR’s publications committee via James Druckman and they are informed about this project.

Things have changed since I published my article. Can I make changes?

Modification to your article will not be possible per Survey Practice Author Terms & Conditions. If you must, you can possibly add an epilogue that we can possibly insert right after the article as a standalone entry. This is not ideal but a workaround, so let’s discuss!

Do I need to sign anything?

No; however, AAPOR does ask that you provide a written acknowledgement that you agree to Survey Practice Author Terms & Conditions. We will be collecting your acknowledgement via email so that we have a final list of authors and chapters by October 24.

What if my co-author(s) do not agree to participate in this project, does it mean I cannot participate?

Not necessarily, but we recommend that you and your co-authors reach an agreement. It is good practice.

From Survey Practice journal’s perspective, its Author Terms & Conditions states “in the case of a multi-authored Article, you are authorized by all of your co-authors to enter into and agree to all of the terms of this license on their behalf.”

I previously declined to participate but now I realized I made a mistake. Can I still have my article included in the book format?

Due to the complexity of book production process, we are unable to add your article if you had previously decided not to participate.

Publishers like Wiley usually require a 6-month process, and we are following a condensed schedule so that the printed books can be available at the 2026 AAPOR conference.

I previously decided to participate but now I realized I made a mistake. Can I have my article or name deleted from the book format?

Yes, we can delete your article or your name before it goes live on Amazon. However, we ask that you only make this request if it is absolutely necessary because there is cost involved to repaginate, reformat, and reprint the book. In addition, once the book goes live on Amazon and/or goes in the printing queue, we simply cannot promise to successfully recall or destroy books that have already been purchased or printed.

Who did you contact about their participation in this book project?

On September 23, 2025, we contacted authors from both the 2025 and 2017 Survey Practice special issues on cross-cultural and multilingual research, as well as the journal’s associate editors for the special issues and then-Editor-in-Chief in 2017.

Cost (9 FAQs)

What is the cost to me to have my article included as a chapter in the printed book?

$0 thanks to the generous support from the Book Publishing Center of the Research Scientist syndicate.

What is the book production cost that is being sponsored?

For this project, the production cost was estimated to be about $10K to cover the following and is sponsored by the Research Scientist syndicate. As of 1/16/2026, the projected cost exceeded $10K (overbudget), which was still being sponsored.

  • Design: book cover, inside cover, back cover, tables, graphics, and publicity artwork.
  • Layout according to printer instructions: formatting, pagination, table of contents, and print-ready file creation.
  • Project management: staying on schedule, controlling quality, and coordinating among the production team, the many special issue authors and editors, and Survey Practice editorship and advisory group.
  • Marketing: graphic design and marketing copy.
  • (underestimated) Harmonization among all chapters and the volume of an academic book like this (the references list and supporting materials occupy almost as many pages as the text). To support the authors, the production team also provided a significant amount of graphic manipulation work that normally would be the authors’ responsibility.

Indexing is time consuming work (and additional cost). As of 1/16/2026, we had to suspend indexing from being part of the current project, but it can be added in a future edition if we secure another sponsor.

What is Amazon’s role in this project?

We are partnering with Amazon on the ISBN registration, printing, and expanded distribution beyond Amazon.com. Amazon is the “publisher of record” for the purpose of printing the book, but most online registries (even Amazon.com itself) will list the book as “independent.” Amazon is a vehicle. For a small project like this, it’s not realistic to set up our own imprint or negotiate with a traditional publisher like Wiley.

The articles are a reprint from editor-reviewed academic e-journal Survey Practice and will be acknowledged as such in the book’s back cover, preface, and the publishing information page inside the front cover. The editors also added a “how to cite” section (also available in the FAQs).

Book production refers to making the online articles into a book format. The book production cost is significant (see FAQ what is the book production cost) and is being sponsored.

Do authors receive royalty from the sale of the book?

There is no royalty from the book sale because this is not a profit-making book. The purpose of the printed book is the ability to own printed books, distribution to an even greater audience through the printed media, and as a collectible for you.

How much does Amazon and bookstores make?

Amazon.com and the bookstores are getting the difference between the retail price and the printing cost. For example, if the retail price is $7 and the printing cost is $5, then they usually get $7 – $5 = $2. They also make a profit from the printing the books and the associated shipping & handling, but we just don’t know exactly what their cost formula is. Think of this as their service fee, just like the Survey Practice journal must pay Scholastica for the publishing platform and article layout services and Lisa Clancy for copyediting.

What is the retail price for the paperback?

Based on a specification of 198 pages and 6 x 9 trim size printed in black & white ink, Amazon estimates a printing cost of $3.38 for one paperback plus shipping and handling. Amazon requires a minimum list price of $6.75 on amazon.com and $8.44 for additional booksellers beyond Amazon. At $0 royalty, we should list the minimum price of $8.44 (£7.08 GBP, €7.17 EUR + country-specific VAT) for the expanded distribution.

Do authors need to pay to receive a printed book in paperback format?

We are looking for a sponsor so all participating authors and editors receive a free copy at the 2026 AAPOR conference in Los Angeles. If it is unlikely that you join us in Los Angeles, we highly recommend that you encourage your employer to purchase a copy of the book on Amazon.com. At this time, we do not have a sponsor to cover the cost of mailing a complimentary copy to you.

If you wish to order more paperbacks, we’ll help you buy them at the author’s price (lower than the list price, see the FAQ on list price), as shown in the screenshot below. It covers printing the book.

Based on a specification of 198 pages and 6 x 9 trim size printed in black & white ink, Amazon estimates a printing cost of $3.38 for one paperback plus shipping and handling. This price is for the authors only, not for the public. The final cost will be calculated by Amazon based on zip codes at the time of delivery.

All costs are payable to Amazon, i.e. 100% goes to Amazon and affiliated printers. Our assistance is a no-cost service to you. We are donating our services to support you and science communication. Absolutely $0 goes to Mandy Sha.

What about costs for a hardcover?

Based on a specification of 198 pages and 6 x 9 trim size printed in black & white ink, Amazon estimates a printing cost of $8.03 for one hardcover plus shipping and handling.

Retail price is higher. Based on a specification of 198 pages and 6 x 9 trim size printed in black & white ink, Amazon requires a list price of $13.38 on amazon.com at $0 royalty for the hardcover. So, we should list the minimum price of $13.38 (£10.22 GBP, €11.71 plus country-specific VAT).

Can we generate profit to donate to AAPOR, or for ourselves?

This is not a profit-making book; in other words, there is no profit from Amazon and bookstore sales for us to donate.

However, there are many other ways for AAPOR to generate resale profit, such as selling the book during future AAPOR conferences or in the AAPOR online store. Following this logic, it is also possible for you to make a personal profit from resales that you administer on your own. Please note we are unable to provide guidance for personal ventures.

Practical Considerations (12 FAQs)

What is the precedence for printing open access publications into the book format?

We follow the model successfully executed by RTI Press. They are a global publisher of peer-reviewed books and articles. Their articles and books are open access online under Creative Commons (like Survey Practice), and high-impact books are available as printed books via Amazon.

Here is an example from 2020 the title The Essential Role of Language in Survey Research online and on Amazon.

Who exactly is the publisher?

Amazon is the “publisher of record” for the purpose of the ISBN registration, and they are also responsible for printing the book and expanding the distribution beyond Amazon.com. Most online registries (even Amazon.com itself) will list the book as “independently published.” In other words, this is a self-published book.

The articles are a reprint from editor-reviewed academic e-journal Survey Practice and will be acknowledged as such in the book’s back cover, preface, and the publishing information page inside the front cover. See how to cite in the FAQ question on resume/CV listing.

Since all the articles have been written, why does the book production still take time and effort?

The process likens converting a web survey to a paper-and-pencil version and is not “quick and dirty”. Most publishers, such as Wiley, requires at a minimum six months for production after articles have been finalized.

What are the registered ISBN?

Paperback ISBN 9798272127709

Hardcover ISBN 9798274707251

What does the printed book look like?
Front and back covers of new book Cross-Cultural Research in Practice: survey methods, translation & pretesting, Latinos/Hispanic, low-and-middle-income-countries
Front and back book covers with ISBN 9798272127709 and trim and bleed lines. Prints 6 x 0.51 x 9.
What is the general book production and dissemination schedule?
  • September-October 2025: Confirm author and editor participation and obtain their written acknowledgements of Survey Practice Author Terms & Conditions
  • November 2005: Proof creation
  • Starting December 1, 2025: Proofs available to the authors
  • December 31, 2025: (or no later than mid-January 2026 if needed): Proof corrections due
  • January 2026: Corrected proof back to the authors and completed.
  • February 2026: Live on Amazon.
  • March 2026: Book goes to the printer
  • Mid-May 2026: Printed books available at the AAPOR conference in Los Angeles
What is an example of publicity for the book?

For the volume Cross-Cultural Research in Practice as a whole, this (paid) LinkedIn Ad ran for two days on February 10 and 11, 2026. LinkedIn Ads performance tracker showed a reach of 44.79K and 55.54K impressions. There was no cost to the participating authors and editors.

Chapter-specific publicity can be viewed by chapter in the resource page.

Can I include my Survey Practice article AND the book in my resume or C.V.? How do I cite the book?

Yes, as long as you acknowledge that your book chapter is a reprint from your Survey Practice article. See Survey Practice Author Terms & Conditions.

How do I cite the book?

Here are how to cite the book after consulting APA style guide.

BOOK: Editors (Eds.). (Year). Title of book: Subtitle [Reprints from Survey Practice]. Publisher.

CHAPTER: Authors. (Year). Title of article. Survey Practice, Vol(Number). https://doi.org/xxxx. Reprinted in Editors (Eds.), Title of book: Subtitle (pp. xx–xx). Publisher.

FOREWORD: Author. 2026. Title of Foreword. Cross-Cultural Research in Practice. [Reprints from Survey Practice]. Publisher.

PREFACE: Authors. 2026. Title of Foreword or Preface. Cross-Cultural Research in Practice. [Reprints from Survey Practice]. Publisher.

You can choose to leave the Publisher blank or enter “Independently Published.” Either way is common practice.

I want to participate but want you to accommodate my stipulations. Can you do that?

We will try our best to work with you. Please communicate with grace and understand that this is a service, not an obligation. If you have concerns, do not participate because participation is voluntary.

Does Mandy Sha receive any profit? Why is she doing all this free work?

Absolutely $0 goes to Mandy Sha or the Research Scientist syndicate that is sponsoring the book production. They are not selling anything or trying to “drum up business” in anyway. If you have concerns, do not participate because participation is voluntary.

This is a service to benefit the collaborating special issue authors and editors as well as the readership. The goal is to further expand the reach of the authors’ messages.

I still have questions after reviewing the detailed FAQs. Who should I contact?

Please contact Mandy Sha.
