How to engage hard-to-reach research participants with respect?

The do not call registry is not the only access issue. Here’re 3 considerations about engagement and respect when surveying hard to reach research participants:

  1. Power relationships. Community leader endorsement is usually significant from a public relations perspective.
  2. Legal and local authority. Tribal advisory council permissions are essential.
  3. Cultural and religious traditions about privacy. For example, an in-person survey with certain people may need to be conducted in a place others can see. (Make sure to stay out of earshot to protect the confidentiality of the research participant’s responses.)
