Speaking opportunities at work help you stand out. Here’re 3 ways to identify, create, and exploit them:
- Take on meeting roles. Notetaking, Zoom hosting, etc. seem to be insignificant speaking opportunities yet they give you the license to speak and influence the outcome.
- You won’t get to give a “speech” regularly. Most of the speaking opportunities at work tend to be brief and impromptu, such as a 30-second response to a question asked of you, or a 10-second question you ask of your boss, co-worker, or stakeholder. It’s not how long you speak but the impact you make that stand out.
- Volunteer. Pitch an idea to speak at a lunch & learn, affinity group event, or to give a toast at a work party. If no one is interested in hosting you, organize it yourself! Speaking opportunities abound!
