How to advance your career with public speaking when you are an introvert?

Introverts are not poor speakers. Introversion is a personality trait while public speaking is a skill. Advance your career by breaking the stereotype with 3 strategies:

  1. Professionals do most of their speaking not in full-length “speech” but Q&A or feedback. So, focus on impact not length. Introverts can speak off the cuff with thoughtfulness!
  2. Practice. Toastmasters is a public speaking and leadership program that is self-paced with structured group schedules. This means you work alone and then interact with a small group of people in a low-stimulation environment. The “risk” is low for introverted individuals and there’re MANY groups to choose from. You can visit different groups to see which feels right to you.
  3. Volunteer for work meeting roles! Roles like notetaking, Zoom hosting, or timekeeping are great roles for introverts. They may seem insignificant; yet they in actuality give you the license to speak and influence the outcome to stand out!
