All speeches share the same general structure – Opening, body, closing. Here’re 3 tailoring possibilities:
- Open by piquing the audience interest. Depending on the speech PURPOSE, you may present a problem that you’ll solve [to persuade], use props to make an impression [to entertain], or state promises [to inform].
- Close by invoking behavioral change. Depending on the FORMAT, it can be a Call to Action [keynote], a summary of the main points [technical presentation], or a callback to earlier, memorable point [storytelling].
- When speaking in a different country, ask for examples of past speeches so you can tailor to their expectations. In some cultures, speech structure can feel more formulaic. For example, you might be expected to open by enumerating your credentials to show respect, and storytelling is usually on topic, and not about showing your vulnerability and “personal side.”
