Don’t turn humor into clamor! Appl y 3 yardsticks to be an effective and humorous presenter:
- The point of being humorous = entertaining AND bring focus on you and your content. Let’s say you present on motivation but the audience is slumping after lunch, you might say:
- [Setup] Another audience asked me “how do you get people to focus? I’ll need a 10-minute nap!” What did I tell them?
- [Pause] I make sure it’s ONLY a 10-min nap, not 11.
- [Punchline] So, who can wake ME up in 10 min?
- [Refocus] Motivation energizes, I’ll show you…
- Self-deprecating humor is effective when you’re comfortable not taking yourself too seriously. If the audience sniffs even an air of insecurity, they WILL turn on you.
- Off limits: Your expertise + ethics are NEVER to be made fun of!
