The purpose of humor is to entertain. For research and business presentations, humor should help make your point. Here’re 3 considerations:
- It’s only funny when the joke is on you. But never be self-deprecating when it comes to your core skills and research integrity – they are sacred.
- Know your audience. The humor that the marketing team appreciates is usually very different from what the research sponsor finds funny, but “inside jokes” can engage your project team.
- At its core, humor is a good story exaggerated (almost always unexpected). For example, if your research improves a product, perhaps you could describe a time when things didn’t work out (exaggerate your misery) and how your life will transform thanks to the research results!
Although these considerations were written with research presentations in mind, they can apply to business presentations as well!
