How to pivot after your strategic planning projections missed the mark?

Accept failure but not defeat! Live to fight another day with 3 strategic planning pivots:

  1. Strategic planning focuses on long-term goals and direction. You might need to let go of some goals right now to prioritize and protect the core interests.
  2. Examine business culture. We’ve all been in situations where we labored a strategy but only to find later that it only partially (or never) launched or something newer, shinier was now taking place. Identifying and acknowledging prior failures can help reposition current strategy (“pivot”) and improve stakeholder messaging before its execution.
  3. Correlation doesn’t imply causation! Evaluation measures can affect strategic planning success /fail determination, for instance, lower revenue may not be a result of lower bids, could high cost be the culprit?
