How to handle power dynamics when other panelists hold more power?

The key is to act like a near equal. When other panelists hold more power in the power dynamics, consider 3 do’s and don’ts to navigate with confidence:

  1. Speaking more ≠ “assert your authority” – you risk looking combative not assertive. Be gracious about other panelists’ seniority and own your uniqueness, for example, if you’re younger, make age your asset – these days brands and employers place great value on expertise reaching ‘young people’.
  2. Want to name drop to enhance your status in the power dynamics? Only do so when it’s relevant to the panel message or name dropping could make you appear desperate for attention. Focus your energy in the moment to respond/reinforce the panel discussion and audience questions.
  3. Sit up, make eye contact, dress stylish yet comfortably. Beyond words, confidence shows that you belong even when you hold less power among other panelists. And confidence gets immortalized in photos!
