How do pauses as a vocal delivery technique help build rapport with your audience?

Pauses are the most underrated yet powerful technique in vocal delivery. They help build rapport with the audience by producing 3 emotional effects:

  1. Anticipation: a big reveal is coming!
  2. Expectation: something new is about to be shared, hold your breath.
  3. Motivation: time to reflect on the message just heard.

Pauses tend to be more difficult to master than tone, pitch, volume, or speed. Too few, the audience drowns in information overload. Too many, the audience frowns on information choppiness. Intentional pauses can create memorable, emotional effects on the audience.
