Conflicts usually stem from wanting to protect what we believe to be in our best interest against threats. Recognize 3 opportunities in conflict resolution with your boss:
- Empower yourself. Conflicts can expose inequities that have not been visible to your supervisor. Speak up AND stay open to feedback – almost always you gain respect this way.
- Focus on the solution. Solution-oriented approach starts by not being defensive, by practicing empathy. It’s human nature to quash perceived threats OR to shut down. so this is a difficult but necessary mentality to develop.
- Recognize the power relationship between your supervisor and you. At times, you might want to let go offenses to protect your time and health. Not engaging does NOT mean it’s a sign of weakness – you need to expend your limited energy on your destiny!
p.s. This is assuming your supervisor is acting in good faith like you in conflict resolution.
