How to use analogies for persuasive speaking?

A deluge of information compete for our audience’s cognitive resources every day. Effective analogies give you an edge in persuasive speaking, try 3 ways to craft them:

  1. Relevancy. Analogies highlight similarities by drawing comparisons. The quicker your listeners can make a connection, the easier it is for them to be won over. So know what your audience is familiar with for persuasive speaking to work.
  2. Repetition. Public speaking is very much in the moment (they can’t re-wind what you said as if it was a recording). So, repeat the analogies throughout to make them stick.
  3. Restructure! Benefits are persuasive, losing them can also be persuasive. Try restructuring the analogies in negation, e.g. Having a healthy diet is like… –> NOT having a healthy diet is like NOT…
