How to use analogies and metaphors to communicate complex concepts to stakeholders?

Analogies compare and metaphors are a figure of speech that compares. They give life to complex concepts but can also backfire. Take 3 precautions when communicating with stakeholders:

  1. Be inclusive. Many American English expressions involve sports, e.g., ballpark estimate. Know your audience so your words illuminate, not confuse.
  2. Less is more. Too many metaphors lose their impact, especially when you’re trying to describe something serious. A clear metaphor weighs more than too many “dad jokes”.
  3. Be creative but don’t overdo it! Analogies are NOT effective if the listeners can’t make a quick connection. For example, “dating is like creating digital art” is too abstract to grasp/interpret and you’d have to explain what it means exactly. (it also distracts – are we talking anime? AI art generator? the listener’s mind wonders!) Whether you’re using analogies or metaphors, clarity is paramount when communicating with stakeholders!
