Any microphone makes you loud but the right techniques enhance your voice. Here’re 3P best practices from my friend Dr. Mary M., an Emmy-nominated sound engineer:
- Proximity effect. The closer you speak into the mike, the fuller your sound, but too close you lose clarity. So test to find the sweet spot. And don’t blow into it because that damages the diaphragm.
- Plosives reduction. Consonants, e.g. p, b, k make you sound breath heavy. The easiest way is add a pop filter to the mike, or even when the mike has one built-in, add a windscreen.
- Pickup pattern. You sound the best speaking into the most sensitive area of the microphone. It’s usually the front, but each mike is different so make sure you test it out!
