How to communicate more effectively with your boss?

Assuming you see your job as making your boss’s job easier, here’re 3 ways to more effectively communicate with them:

  1. No matter how “cold” they might seem, bosses are humans just like you and feel empathy sometimes apathy but never telepathy. So, help them out by speaking with confidence, setting boundaries, and not acting like you have all the answers (or you set unrealistic expectations for yourself).
  2. Be clear when you are stating facts vs. opinions. Support your ideas with data, evidence, and sources to enhance your credibility when communicating with the boss.
  3. Ask the right questions to identify/define the problem and reach the optimal solution. Do your research ahead of time to know what to ask and don’t embroil multiple questions in one so they forget what the actual question is!
