How to convey work-life balance needs to stakeholders as the project manager?

Stakeholders’ priority is achieving business goals. Unapologetically yet strategically address work-life balance with them 3 ways:

  1. Let’s say you need to reschedule a standing meeting to drop your child off at school. Propose the rescheduling & ask for feedback. Since you manage the project/task, sometimes asking is all it takes.
  2. Don’t “solution dump” right away! Let them process, you listen to their concerns and then suggest solutions to maintain ‘business as usual’ while achieving work-life balance: perhaps your deputy can sit in, you call in remotely, or start the meeting 20 min later.
  3. Being vulnerable ≠ uncomfortable so no need to share many details of your balancing struggles. Thank the stakeholder and be genuinely enthusiastic how the flex schedule boosts your productivity and work satisfaction!
