How to present data to clients in a visually engaging way?

Data storytelling using tables, charts, and graphs is only visually engaging when used appropriately.

Don’t underestimate tables! A table of rows and columns is easier to understand when you want to achieve 3 data storytelling purposes:

  1. highlight a precise value, eg. 200 people said…
  2. show few dimensions and values
  3. display numbers AND words, eg. survey of conference attendance number by session topic names

In comparison, charts and graphs help tell a visually engaging data story when…

  1. there are many data series to show
  2. detecting and displaying outliers from the rest is your goal, and
  3. when you want to illustrate how data is distributed.
