Data storytelling using tables, charts, and graphs is only visually engaging when used appropriately.
Don’t underestimate tables! A table of rows and columns is easier to understand when you want to achieve 3 data storytelling purposes:
- highlight a precise value, eg. 200 people said…
- show few dimensions and values
- display numbers AND words, eg. survey of conference attendance number by session topic names
In comparison, charts and graphs help tell a visually engaging data story when…
- there are many data series to show
- detecting and displaying outliers from the rest is your goal, and
- when you want to illustrate how data is distributed.
