Research presentations differ from TED talks in that the key message is structured around problems & solutions that’re substantiated with credible evidence. Here’re 3 engagement strategies, including when presenting virtually:
- Unclutter the slides and enlarge fonts. This is especially important for visual research presentations because your audience could be watching from a tiny mobile screen and not dual monitors.
- Start the with a motivating example to illustrate the why and the real-life impact and implications of your research. It makes a memorable opening!
- If presenting virtually, do NOT start with: let me launch my slides… The audience’s expectation of a live presentation centers around YOU the expert, and immediate screenshare relegates you to a tiny thumbnail (some platforms auto-hide). Or how is it different from an asynchronous format?
