Simply put, rhetorical devices are techniques to create memorable cadence and effect in your presentation. Anaphora, metaphor, and expletive are quick to construct and fun to say:
- Anaphora. Repeat the same words at the start of the next statement for emphasis. A simple anaphora: “I love WordPress! It’s easy to use. I love WordPress! It provides a vast network. I love WordPress! It serves as an affordable resource.”
- Metaphor. Make figure of speech comparisons, e.g., Mom’s embrace is the best medicine. Metaphors need not be fancy but must be easy to understand or the rhetorical device becomes confusing.
- Expletive. Deliberately use fillers: “I do love spring in Chicago.” “It was declining sales that sealed the fate.” Note that “expletive” is not profanity in the context of a rhetorical device.
Just don’t overuse these devices because too much effect desensitizes the audience to your cadence and style!
