How to respond to criticism from peers?

Here’re 3 ways to handle criticism from your peers without allowing it to affect your confidence and performance:

  1. There’s a difference between criticism and critique. Criticism tends to tear you down, and critique tends to build you up. Train your ears to recognize which is which to minimize triggers for stress and anxiety.
  2. Even constructive feedback can be difficult to hear. Resist the urge to ‘defend’ what you said. Say “Thank You” to graciously move on and give yourself the grace to reflect and react at a later time.
  3. If a good speaker criticizes your presentation, know that a good speaker is not necessarily a good presenter coach. Be secure in your own assessment to tune out the noise. Ultimately, you control your message to fulfill YOUR public speaking destiny.
