How to use anecdotes to engage the audience?

Anecdotes are mini-stories and are usually a recounting of real-life happenings. Integrate them 3 ways in your presentation:

  1. As transition. Between making one main point and going to the next, an anecdote can feel refreshing. Just make sure you have a point that’s relevant to your presentation so that anecdote doesn’t feel random and distract the audience from your core message.
  2. As a precursor. Before introducing a new topic, tell an anecdote to set the stage and engage the audience.
  3. As a standalone. To enhance your authenticity, you could tell an anecdote from your past. They are not stories that require an arc (conflict and transformation), so keep it short and make it interesting!
