How to refute a counterargument?

Counterarguments oppose your point of view. Weaken their position and strengthen yours by following these 3 steps:

  1. Acknowledge. Show that you are familiar with the counterargument; you might even want to concede to its merit.
  2. Rebut. Despite its merit, your argument is superior. Enumerate the flaws of the counterargument.
  3. Support. Cite credible sources of research, data, and evidence to support your position. U.S. government statistics are trustworthy (such as the Census Bureau) and well-established news outlets are reliable when they cite from authoritative sources. Refute counterarguments with facts!
