How to share project progress with your sponsors and clients?

Do not conflate success with perfection when reporting project progress! When sharing progress updates, report both successes and challenges. Here’re 3 key pieces of documentation and lessons learned to share:

  1. Negative and positive risks that were avoided, accepted, mitigated, and transferred
  2. Permanent solutions to workarounds, if any
  3. Fit for purpose resources

Here’s why: Acknowledging challenges as part of lessons learned and highlighting solutions in the reporting will enhance your reputation as a trustworthy and resourceful project manager and help to level-set future expectations. This is because not all sponsors and clients understand that everyday challenges to manage can involve workarounds, resource reallocations, and cost overrun/underrun.
