How to communicate project progress without creating confusion?

Project progress updates usually involve a review of work completion against the budget, schedule and resources. Minimize confusion with 3 strategies:

  1. If your progress deviates from what was planned in the positive direction, that’s not necessarily good news – it means your forecasts were off. Examine the root cause, eg. market change, resource reallocation, and have a reforecast strategy ready.
  2. Executives don’t have the time (or your specialized knowledge) to “get down in the weeds”. So, start with big picture headlines before going into the details.
  3. Create a template and reuse for each progress update. The consistency will make your life easier!
